    Appearance Age: Mid-20s
    True Age: 26
    Gender: Male
    Height: 5'10
    Weight: 177 lbs

    Character Information

Personality: There's something about Shinobu Shiranui that sets him apart from others. It might be the way he walks. It might even be the way he talks. But if you ask Shinobu what that something is? He just laughs at the question. "It's because there's only one of me, and everyone wants to be me." will be his response. He's arrogant and full of himself. He feels like he could get anything and everything he wanted (some things just by his good looks alone).

Unfortunately, he can't. Shinobu is broke most of the time and spends what money he has on cigars and traveling expenses (in that order). Shinobu is also seen as annoying at times, as the guy can get a little expressive. He's not one to shy from a dirty joke and can drink a lot of people under the table. The guy also has a weird sense of fashion, which he defines as "pretty damn cool." He's also not the bravest of souls and if he's outnumbered or severely out-muscled, he's prone to just run. Shinobu is also not a fan of surprises or loud noises, which is why he never has an alarm clock. Shinobu is also one to sleep late (he averages at waking up at ten in the morning). He claims that humans aren't supposed to be up before eight, and is useless and whiny if he wakes up earlier than that.

Shinobu is the definition of a free spirit with his own set of rules. He doesn't care about Arcadia, Brauk, Cieria, or Zakat. He goes where the waves are. If they're better in Zakat, he goes there. If they're better in the mountains of Brauk, that's where you'll find him. He's the type of guy that will skip out on a bill if he doesn't have the money, then mail it back once he gets the money (and if he remembers). He doesn't have a permanent home and instead has a mobile home. He prefers that to being tied down to one place. Shinobu is a wanted criminal in all four nations, but never for anything major. He hasn't killed anyone who didn't attack him first, for instance. Most of it is skipping out on bills, running from the authorities, and a single charge of operating a motor vehicle without a license. The guy is lazy though, so he's not really a threat. He's always in his underwear in his home.

Shinobu is the editor, reporter, and owner of the "free spirit" magazine RAY=OUT. RAY=OUT is listed in Zakat as "anti-government propaganda." Why? RAY=OUT's articles are mostly on things that sound like anarchy. Shinobu once wrote "Forget borders, kings, land. Who needs them? They'll just keep you tied to somewhere—somewhere where you can't reach your dreams from. Travel, see the world, meet new people, and find your dreams. Man doesn't need a government to tell it what to do if we can all just go for our dreams." Shinobu is an idealist in a weird sense. He believes in the good in people, but he's also the first one to point out that humans are inherently flawed. "But it's finding the flaws in ourselves, finding the grain of sand in our gears, and finding why it's there and fixing it that makes humans good people."

    Character Background:
Shinobu was an orphan. A war orphan, actually. He doesn't have a mom, dad, sister, brother, or any relatives he knows of. He bounced from orphanage to orphanage for all of his life until he was 16, when he joined the Arcadian Defense Legion as a scout. He lied about his name and age, and the young man was, frankly, not actually in the ADL. Once in the ADL, Shinobu thought he could do right by himself. He wanted to see the world that he wasn't able to see from the boarded windows of the orphanages. And from there, he saw many horrible things. He saw towns ransacked by bandits. He saw women raped by Dark Guilds. He saw it all. And then he saw that the ADL wasn't entirely doing anything about it. There just wasn't enough manpower to cover the entirety of Arcadia, even with guilds. Most of the work he saw the ADL doing was cleaning up and not actually fixing the problem.

Shinobu tried to fight when he saw danger, but it just... wasn't in him. He wasn't a fighter. He wasn't someone who could just so callously take another's life. He could defend himself, sure, but that wasn't fighting. That wasn't defending someone else. That wasn't what he wanted to do. He realized then that something like the ADL wasn't for him. So he went AWOL and left the ADL for good. He traveled—searching for something he could do. He wrote fliers warning of potential dangers, and that is how he ended up saving more people than he ever could with just a weapon or two. So Shinobu did some odd jobs here and there and combined it with his money from the ADL. Shinobu used those funds to buy an odd item—an Arcane printing press. It's about the size of a dining chair, but it can produce multiple copies of the same piece of writing over and over. He also bought himself what other people would call scrap metal—that is detailed below.

Shinobu created a magazine called RAY=OUT and used it to spread information on what the ADL was doing (or rather, wasn't doing). He also used it to spread warning of incidents he noticed as he traveled in his scrap wagon. The magazine sold exceptionally well, and not just in Arcadia. Shinobu traveled to Zakat, Brauk, and Cieria and did the same. Once a month, a new issue of RAY=OUT is produced and makes its way to different vendors that Shinobu trusts. They distribute it to other vendors and eventually, the magazine makes its way to places people can easily find it.

On an investigative trip in Arcadia, Shinobu came across a gruesome scene and rescued a young boy from being sexually assaulted. Well, further sexually assaulted. Shinobu was regarded as the young boy's hero, and the two actually grew close. Shinobu eventually took the young kid under his wing as an "Assistant Editor." The young boy, Setsuna, was to look over what Shinobu wrote for spelling errors, grammatical errors, and things of that nature. Setsuna was also effectively going to be Shinobu's gofer. Setsuna didn't seem to mind, and has learned quite a lot about the world from Shinobu. Shinobu was glad to have someone along for the ride that listened to him and didn't fawn over him like all the women do (that's an exaggeration [but Shinobu would never admit that]).

    Type: N/A

Equipment: Standard traveling gear, a very nice lighter.
Reflecting Board: Or a ref board for short. Ref boards are very expensive, very tricky, and very unique sporting equipment for the sport of "lifting." They look like a rectangle, but they take in the Arcana that is in the air and use it to propel themselves. In other words, it allows someone to surf on the aerial Arcana. The sport is dangerous and not really popular in any main circle yet, but it is possible to find other people with one. In areas of low Arcana density, each Ref Board has a Flywheel which contains Arcana within it and then propels the board with that Arcana instead. In effect, it spreads out Arcana for the board to ride. The board can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour at maximum.

The Silver Streamer: This piece of work is what Shinobu and Setsuna call a home. It's about 40 feet long and has a single bathroom, a single bed, a control cabin, and a kitchen/dining room/living room/writing desk/printing press mixture. The thing is a modified gas-driven transport with an entire living area within it. In modern terms, it's a mobile home specifically designed after the Airstream style. It's silver on the outside and has tires meant for rough and bumpy roads. Shinobu keeps enough gasoline to last him a month outside of Zakat in shielded storage beneath the craft. Shinobu has the want to make it fly by putting the same concept of a ref board onto the bottom of it. He has had no success so far.

Skills: Shinobu isn't that good with any particular weapon, but he is capable of defending himself to a very limited degree. He's an amazing lifter (the term for someone who does the sport of lifting) to the point that one might call him a genius. Shinobu's skill lies mainly with his mind though. Don't ask him to cook though. It always needs salt. Lots of salt.
