Night Nine is an elite group not affiliated with any other entity other than themselves. Their mission is simple—destroy any and all that could or would destroy the current order. There are no major wars, there are no major revolts, etc. Despite there still being crime, the world is peaceful as a whole. And so, no one must be allowed to upset that order. Night Nine has two mottos—Night Time is the Right Time and There are No Exceptions. The former refers to that most people let their guards down at night and that it is easier for the Night Nine to move around without being detected. The latter refers to the fact that all with the power to upset the order will be eliminated. Although not an "exception," some are allowed to join the Night Nine if there is an open position. However, anyone that joins Night Nine needs to know that they can, and will, probably be killed in the line of duty.
The Night Nine is known as such because there are nine of them. There may be less because one or may die, but there are never more than nine. The nine are broken down into specific named positions, which don't have any special status differentiating them, save for Reaper which is always the leader and can only give the order to fall back. That is the only authority the Reaper has over any of the others. They are all referred to by the first letter of one of their actual names or by their position, but the former is more common. There are two rules of Night Nine—eliminate only those who have the potential and to not purposely weaken Night Nine. There are no other restrictions. This also means that members are allowed to join other organizations.
