History and Personality

History: Why is Setsuna's history so... out of place? Why is it before his personality? To understand Setsuna, you must know his history first. But a warning, it is not a pleasant one.

Sestuna was born on a Saturday in the dog days of Summer. He was born to Setsuko and Naohisa Hayate, who both ran a small inn. Setsuko, his mother, was twenty-eight and Naohisa, his father, was thirty at the time of Setsuna's birth. Setsuko and Naohisa had been married for two years and this was their first try at a child. It would also be their last. Due to complications in the birth, Setsuko was unable to carry another child. It wasn't something fatal or really dangerous, but it was enough to send her into a depression soon after. She sheltered her son, as he would be her only chance at the child she wanted. His first words were thus "mama."

Relatives and family friends loved the little Setsuna. He was an adventurous and curious toddler. He once somehow found his way into the inn's fridge and ended up shut in there for all of two minutes before Setsuko opened the door to see a slightly-shivering Setsuna throw an orange at her. He was, of course, fine but he was sick. Soon Setsuko's friend Michiyo had a daughter, and then her friend Miharu had a son. The three kept their kids together and they became instant friends, even with Setsuna being nearly two years older than them. However, Setsuna was a little shorter and a little less 'built' than many of the boys his age. When they enrolled him into the public school, he was actually rather popular because his parents owned an inn as well as him being the fastest runner in their grade.

And then late-elementary school came. It was normal at first. Setsuna was an average student. He didn't excel, nor did he fail. His parents pushed him to do better, but they were proud of him nonetheless. Alongside that pride in their child, there was another emotion—worry. Setsuna was not growing like the other boys his age. They were afraid he was going to be picked on, so they sat down with him and talked to him about bullying and what to do. They said to go tell a teacher or someone like that—thankfully Miharu and Michiyo both were employed by the school. After their talk, Naohisa pulled the young Setsuna aside and told him "If someone hits you, you hit them back." Setsuna didn't know which one to believe... since they weren't the same thing. Fortunately or unfortunately, Setsuna decided to go on what his mother had told him.

And then middle school came. He was still much shorter than the boys his age. Where they would grow an inch, he stayed the same, and when they would grow two inches he would grow one. Classmates started to whisper about, talking about how he was the same size as some of the girls in the class. This didn't stop. He told the teacher, who told the class to stop. However, it just got worse. He was beaten up one day after school for tattling on people. He was left with a bloodied nose and two black eyes. The other students were swiftly suspended, but Setsuko had a bad feeling about this. Or rather, the feeling started when Setsuna told her "They hit me because they said I looked like a girl."

A few months after that incident, Miharu and her family had to move. Her husband was offered a job in one of the big cities and they simply could not turn the offer down. Of course it was sad to see a friend leave for both the Hayate family, but worse was that one of Setsuna's two lifelines at his school was gone. And as soon as it was, the bullying resumed. When he was in the equivalent of eighth grade, he was held down and the captain of one of the sports teams at the school had his girlfriend put makeup on him. Pictures were taken and it wasn't until a passing teacher heard the obnoxiously loud laughter and decided to see what the ruckus was that it stopped. The captain was kicked off of the team and the cameras of all of the students there were confiscated, but it was too late. The pictures had already been passed around.

It didn't get any better after that. A member of the yearbook committee put Setsuna in the female's section for his grade. People signed him up for the female's sports. Setsuna stopped growing his hair out after the makeup incident, but people just called him butch instead. He tried to gain weight. At first, it was a normal workout routine but he'd always get catcalls from the men, which only made him want to stop. And he did, which led to him attempting to eat a lot to gain weight—only to hear two guys tell him "Trying to fatten yourself so your tits can get bigger?" He stopped after that. Nothing he could do would stop it.

When he was in the equivalent of tenth grade, a girl started to approach him and they became friends. The bullying stopped for some reason soon after. They really hit it off, and he was finally glad to have someone that wouldn't pick on him. And they eventually began dating. Things matured, and they were about to have relations when she stepped into the bathroom. They were both naked at the time... and then the girl took a picture of him from the front from the bathroom. He didn't notice it, but then she came out and started to get dressed talking about how she had gotten an email and her father was in the hospital. He offered to take her there, but she said no thanks. That night, the picture of him, standing there, naked and blushing, was spread throughout the entire school with the caption "Look, the freak even shaves!" He actually didn't, he just never grew any body hair besides what was on his head.

Setsuko and Naohisa were furious and went to the school to see what could be done. That's when the discovered it was the principal's daughter that had done this. She had been suspended, but there wasn't much else they could do. After the meeting, Setsuko spoke to Michiyo. Michiyo then told her that they should not be seen conversing together, especially on this topic. She explained that the school's staff was so tight-knit and centered around the principal that anyone who was seen as "against the flow" would no longer be employed there. And sure enough, Michiyo was fired a week later. Their family had to move to somewhere else because no one would hire Michiyo nor her husband. Setsuna's final life line had been cut before the worst thing happened.

Setsuna awoke two days later in a hospital bed. He had no recollection of what had happened. His mother and father were beside his bed, both had been crying nonstop it seemed. The doctors came in and checked his vitals, stating everything was looking good. Setsuna then asked what had happened... And he blacked out soon after hearing the answer, only to reawake hours later, screaming and crying. The perpetrators had been arrested and would no longer bother him. He asked how they were found if he didn't tell them. Then a young man with black hair and violet hair stepped forward. He was someone who was supposed to be transferring there as an assistant teacher the next semester and was getting a tour of the school. He had heard Setsuna's crying and screaming and broke the door down. He ended up knocking out all six people in there before calling the police. Because of the state Setsuna was in when they arrived, this young man would not be charged with anything. The young man introduced himself as Shinobu Shiranui, a graduate of the school four years prior.

A few days later, Setsuna was able to return home. Curious to note was the absence of Naohisa. Upon returning home, Setsuko recieved a phone call that Naohisa was arrested. Leaving a family member in charge of Setsuna, she rushed to the police station. His knuckles were bloody and bruised and he had the most stern look Setsuko had ever seen. He had been arrested on charges of assault and battery. After posting bail, Naohisa told Setsuko "I had to give that fuck-up of a parent and of a principal a piece of my damn mind." Setsuko had a light smile and whispered "Good." Setsuna was removed from the school and his last year was done from home. Shinobu kept checking in on Setsuna, and the two became friends. Setsuna told Shinobu that he wanted to die after what had happened to him. Shinobu flicked his forehead, telling him "It's easy to die. But you didn't. You're living, and you're strong for it. Stronger than those monsters can ever be."

Naohisa didn't serve jail time partly because of the circumstances but also because he didn't throw the first punch. However, business at the inn declined sharply because of how badly the principal was assaulted. Shinobu still visited Setsuna and was almost regarded as another member of the Hayate family. They even set aside a room for him to always stay in if he needed a place to stay. He ended up working part-time at the inn assisting Naohisa, who had ended up damaging his hand in his assault of the principal, with maintenance around the inn. Four years after the incident the principal (as he had not been fired, for some unknown reason), found out Shinobu was still talking to the Hayate family, and he fired the young man. He left a few days later, his reputation in the town ruined. He told Setsuna to "stay strong and live." A few hours after Shinobu left down, Setsuna followed him. He did not catch up to Shinobu... but a pair of thugs thought he had a "purty mouth" and put a bag over his head, kidnapping him... Currently he has no idea where is heading, all that he knows is that he hopes Shinobu will save him...

Personality: Setsuna hates his body. He hates how feminine he looks. He hates how no matter what he does, he can't build up weight or muscle bulk. He hates how soft his skin is. He hates how he has to cover up the scars on his left arm. He hates how short he is. He hates how soft his hair is. He hates everything about his body. He hates what his body has been through. Although he hates his physical body, Setsuna does not hate himself. Setsuna is not confident in himself either, but he doesn't hate himself. He's not even really proud of himself either. Be he has a mindset... that he thinks things can be better. That there are other people out there like Shinobu.

Setsuna is very skittish around people. A simple touch can have him tense up and literally jump. Loud noises also scare him, although not as much. He moves around in the crowd quietly, trying not to be really seen. Of course it doesn't always work. And because of that, hearing "Hey good lookin'" and other cat-calls and whistling at him makes his heart race and his flight reflex to jump-start. He'll have to leave the area and get some fresh air or else he'll have a major panic attack. The one thing that trigger a panic attack immediately is the sound of a door locking. That clicking is enough to send him in a frenzy and he'll look for any way out without thinking. This means that if he is in a multi-story hotel and someone locks the door, he'll probably jump out the window. Although he blocks doors leading to his bedroom at night, he doesn't lock it. He just can't do that. Setsuna also will not drink at a bar. He's heard what people do there to people's drinks and doesn't want to risk it at all.

Setsuna is easily embarrassed and can't really take a joke. Every time someone compliments him, he always says "Thank you, but please don't do that again." He'll then move away from that person because he feels bad about doing that. But he'd rather not have a repeat of his past. What few people he does find comfortable to be around, he will probably always stay near them. He generally won't be around people who he has to defend, as he's rather weak and frail and scared all the time. However, Setsuna will stand up for Shinobu. If someone ever insults Shinobu, then Setsuna will tell them to stop. He may not be able to do anything, but he owes his life to Shinobu.

Appearance

Appearance: Unfortunately for Setsuna, the first thing many people notice is how un-manly he looks. He's very petite at five-foot-three and weighing at a tiny one-hundred-and-thirty pounds. His skin is perfectly soft and smooth without a single blemish on his face, giving the appears than he wears make up. However, he keeps a single arm completely bandaged from burns and scars he has sustained. He has no tattoos nor any real muscle bulk. Instead, he looks like a doll. His dark eyes and dark hair both assist in this, although he chooses to keep his hair long out of respect for the one person who he can call a friend.
